Mariners Get Their First Win

After 6 straight losses, including 2 real tough ones in recent games, the Port aux Basques Mariners are in the win column. Last night, at the Bruce 2, the home team outlasted the Deer Lake Red Wings 9-8. It was Deer Lake's first loss after 7 straight wins.

Darren Dean led the winners in the goal-scoring department with a hat trick. Defenceman Chad Jones, getting better each game he plays with Port aux Basques, had a goal and 3 assists. Captain Rob Parsons had a 3 point night with 2 goals. Robert Mercer chipped in with a goal and 2 helpers.

For the Red Wings, smooth-skating rearguard Lucas McKay had a big night with 3 goals and 2 assists. Drew Langdon also had a 5 point night with a goal and 4 assists. Josh Skinner was also firing on all cylinders with a hat trick.

The Red Wings came to Port aux Basques with just one goalie, Nick Mitchelmore, and had the misfortune to lose him to injury part way through period number 1. Forward Robbie Greene stepped in and played in goal for the rest of the game and filled in admirably.
